Today is Friday, June 19. It’s Juneteenth, a day that I had little awareness of before a few weeks ago. I’m embarrassed at my ignorance and white privilege, but leaning into the ‘know better then do better’ mantra from Mayo Angelo. I’ve learned it’s an important day within our nation’s history, and one that should be considered a national federal holiday. Continuing to lean in, learn, and intentionally turn it into action.
- I was checking on a dear friend yesterday after her busy work week (example of low-effort friendship tending – much more to come on all things friendship). We started talking about Father’s Day weekend plans and she said they were making this recipe. I immediately packed all the ingredients to take with us because I have some blackberries that need to be used. I will report back.
- I’m reading this book with my best friend Betsy. The movie adaptation is also available on multiple platforms for free during the month of June. I saw someone mention they donated the price of the rental to Bryan Stevenson’s Non-profit. We will be doing the same when we watch later this month (trying to finish the book first).
- Do you need another pair of jeans? Probably not. Are these my new favorite ‘non-skinny leg but not wide-leg pants’ in my closet? Yes, yes they are. I think they’re the perfect ‘summer’ jean. Slightly cropped with a split at the ankle that’s perfect for sandals or flats. And they are on crazy sale.
- My honorary status as a Simplified Team Member is well-documented. This team is doing work in the anti-racism and inclusivity spaces and I’m grateful for how they are listening and learning.
- My beloved sun hat is back in stock (the cream version is on pre-order) and it’s safely tucked away in my suitcase because….
We’re off on our first family adventure since quarantine and I’m hoping for the best, planning for the worst and prepared to bail and come home at a moment’s notice.
Speaking of preparing to bail, if anyone has Jeff Bezo’s contact information, I’d love to send him a note and volunteer to be in a test group for the next version of the Kid Amazon Fire Tablet. I’m grateful for their price point and durability, but I’m having a time and a half trying to figure out how to work them. Signing off to Google “how to access downloads offline”.
xo,
KNW
PS: It’s going to be downhill after last week’s pre-Father’s Day link from Wright Thompson, but here’s a one to ponder on the topic of fatherhood, masculinity, and progress – KPW
I guess I’m in the book club, too! 🙂 Awaiting a positive report on the crumble!!
